I’m going to be real with y’all. I’m writing this on a Monday, the Monday after A Lot of News Happened, and coupled with some personal stuff that’s been sapping all of my energy, I’m officially spent. I’m exhausted very easily these days, but as you can imagine, The Events of our current times are exacerbating that fatigue. I’m sure you’re feeling the exact same way, if not potentially worse. And I hate that for you! I hate this for us!!
All that is to say: I could really use some escapism right now. I want to get lost. Part of starting this project was to challenge myself, to address my cinema blindspots, to power through the writer’s block that’s been plaguing me for ages, but it’s also given me something to focus on other than our modern day horrors, and take my attention away from the device that gives me depression and also sometimes makes phone calls.1 I’ve been slowly weaning myself off of social media over the past year or so—I’ve deleted my Twitter/X app, Facebook feels as distant to me as MySpace at this point, I never fully connected with TikTok, and I only keep Instagram around to stay up-to-date with my movie club and some long-distance friends. It’s freeing to not know what’s going on most days. I never know who the main character of the day is, and that feels wonderful! Comment sections can’t hurt me now because they essentially don’t exist!
So the few times when the chaos and hellfire does creep into my real life, it can quickly get overwhelming. This is when I appreciate movies most. I spent this weekend diving into some new-to-me movies and some fun, familiar favorites. Below are the movies I watched this weekend, maybe you’ll feel inspired to watch a couple of them yourself to escape this absolutely wretched inflamed butthole of a planet we live on.
